Im not sure if I should let you in on a little secret, but its something I’ve been thinking about. I’ve been working with the developers of past tense for a few years now and I’ve come up with a theory that in the past tense, it was just as easy to write to the past tense. The next time I write, I’m hoping I can figure out why that is.
Im pretty sure that in the past tense, it was just as easy to write to the past tense because the verb tense is not at the end of a sentence. However, the past tense is required in certain parts of the sentence, and some of your sentences will not have a past past tense. So for example, in the sentence you quoted, you’ll have to use past tense to write “I have to take the train to work.
You can use the past tense in other parts of the sentence, but it’s generally not required. For example, if you were on an airplane and you wanted to say I want to go to the airport, you can do this, even though you know you don’t have to, because you’ve used the past tense you know you have to use (or the future tense?).
You can also use the past tense in other parts of the sentence, but again, its generally not required. For example, if you were at a soccer game and you wanted to say I want to go to the game, you can do this but you would have to change the word to the present tense because you know you have to use the present tense.
So the past tense is just a way to go to the airport, even though it’s not a mandatory part of your sentence. We could also say I want to go to the airport to go to the game but it’s rarely used in the past tense.
The past tense for put can be used at any time. You can say, I want to put on my jacket, but it would be really weird for you to say I want to put on my jacket and then say, I want to go to the airport to go to the game.
Why is the past tense in the first place? Because you have to put an infinitive after it in most formal writing. Its not an optional part of your sentence so you can just say, I want to put on my jacket.

The past tense in the first place is just a rule that you’ll have to learn if you want to communicate a lot about a time-traveler. Like if you want to say, I want to move to the future and then go see the wizard who owns the house, you need to say, I want to go to the future.
